Photo Diary: El Anatsui at the Brooklyn Museum.
This is an artist who knows his way around materials: the lids of tin cans, the tops of whiskey bottles, the rumpled bits of old printing plates, scraps of singed wood — all transformed into the most staggeringly beautiful pieces imaginable. If you haven’t been, don’t miss Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui at the Brooklyn Museum. The show really made me see the painterly quality of so much of his work (especially that last one — which I particularly liked).
On view through August 4.
